Welcome to EDSML 2023#

Greetings to our new students#

These pages contain useful information and advice for new students on the 2023 Environmental Data Science & Machine Learning Masters course in the Department of Earth Science & Engineering at Imperial College London. Please read these pages carefully, starting with the tasks we request that you perform before you arrive.

These pages are for new EDSML students. Students on the ACSE course should see here. Students on the GEMS course should see here.

Access to the course Jupyterhub site#

Future EDSML students should have received an email containing a GitHub username. Once they have created an account with that name, they will be able to access a Jupyterhub instance here to practise live Python coding.

Before the course starts#

Before the course starts on 3rd October 2023, future EDSML students should attempt to complete the following tasks:

  1. Read through the introductory material regarding Python coding and mathematics.

  2. Create your new GitHub account with the username in your email. Instructions for new GitHub users can be found here: The Github.com Website or in the email you were sent.

  3. Work through the four Python exercises to test your Python skills.

  4. Work through the Software Carpentry lectures on the bash command line. See Intro to the Command Line for more information and links.

  5. Work through the Software Carpentry lectures on git. See The git version control system for more information and links.
